I think you should let the story guide you to its ending, no matter how dark that ending may be. I'm all for your staying true to the narrative. In fact, if you think about, we haven't seen a lot of original, quality, dark fic since the early days of this fandom.

Otoh, if you feel the story leads to a happy ending? I'll love it just as well. I'm deeply INTO this version of the characters.
