Write or die!

Okay, I've been seeing this around my flist, and I thought: Yeah, right, like that would ever work for me.

But then, I've really been struggling to make my minimum for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo these past few days, so I decided to try it anyway. What the hell, I thought. And oh my God! It's amazing how well it works. My focus wonders terribly when I'm writing. It can take me HOURS to write 500 words. I really didn't think the threat of an obnoxious noise would be enough to MAKE me pay attention. But it totally is. I did Write or Die twice, with a goal of 500 words each time, and I've managed to write almost 1300 words altogether, in less than an hour.

If you're having trouble concentrating, I really recommend giving it a go.

SO FANTASTIC. I'm almost excited about writing tonight instead of just dreading it! :D

It is! I'm truly amazed. I've written more than twice my daily goal already, and it felt so easy. And I'm definitely planning to write more.

Just. wow.

Honestly -- when I first started NaNo, I wrote for an hour and got about 400 words. Last night, with WoD, I wrote for a little under two hours and got 2300+ words. It's sort of crazy how well it worked for me (and I'll certainly need it if I'm going to meet my goal for the month). I think part of it is the push to just write, get the words out, and to not worry about making it perfect; I tend to self-edit way to much, otherwise.

I have exactly the same problem. I do way too much editing as I'm trying to write, and that frustrates me, and pretty soon I'm checking email or staring off into space. WoD is brilliant because it makes me get out of my own way. I love this thing!

It's basic psychology! Isn't it awesome?

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
So awesome! I read the explanation after I'd tried it, and you know, it totally makes sense. Those long-term abstract goals really aren't enough encouragement. *g*

Hypothetical carrot next year vs. real stick now.

I'm totally going back to use it again today!

The Kamikaze level is evil. SO EVIL.

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, I can't even imagine. I don't think I'm brave enough for Kamikaze level!

If you try it, make sure to pay attention! If you look away or start doing something in another window, you will regret it.

I'd need something like this for fanart.

Hee. I need something like this for pretty much every aspect of my life!

I think I'm going to try that for a class paper I'm working on tonight, ha -- because my problem is I keep wandering away from medieval women in boxes to write Peterick! And that's not helping anyone. *G*

I may use this thing for when I have to write boring crap at work. It's amazing how much better I focus when I'm threatened with loud, obnoxious noise! *g*

Also, Linz, not that I'm trying to encourage you to neglect medieval women or anything, but your writing Peterick? That helps EVERYONE! It really, really does. /bad influence

Haha even if it's Peterick mpreg? *feels dirty...but right, somehow*

I only need to write 5k of medieval women! And like, 27k of mpreg! And yet somehow I only have 800 words of the former and 22k of the latter. You know what this means? Pete should have been a medieval woman. Then I would have my priorities in better order.

Clearly.

Peterick mpreg, excellent! Curiously, who's knocked up? You know, just so I can anticipate.

Also, clearly Pete needs to be a little bit more cooperative with you about your paper. I'm sure if he tried really hard he could be a medieval woman. Or, you know, something. *g*

Pete would be the best medieval woman ever. He'd have visions and Patrick would be his scribe. And his visions would be like, ridiculously sexual and make Patrick really super-uncomfortable. Patrick would push his little medieval spectacles up on his nose and burrow further into his monk-robes and Pete would be like, "you're very cute when you're uncomfortable" and Patrick would flee and try to get Father Gabe to find Pete a new scribe, but then end up having to go back anyway because he's sort of started kinda believing in Pete.

Patrick is knocked up! And the baby is a boy, which means I have until Ashlee pops to write this and get it out because otherwise it's too much like IRL and weird. *frets*

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, I didn't know Pete was having a boy. I still can't believe he's going to be a daddy.

Also, I totally support your vision of him as a medieval woman and scribe!Patrick. Is there anything more adorable than blushing, super-uncomfortable Patrick? I really don't think so! And Pete would SO enjoy shocking the cute little monk. Or PETE'S cute little monk, as I'm sure Pete would think of him.

He keeps kinda changing his story so it could be a girl? But Papa Joe keeps making comments that make me think it's a boy, and also Pete told Playboy he's "90% sure" it's a boy. Ahaha Playboy. So yes. In conclusion! I try not to think about him being a daddy IRL, because then I would feel weird writing about it in fanfic! /o\

Now I'm trying to figure out if like, Pete's actually a boy-visionary, or if he's like, dressing as a woman. Because Pete in drag is sort of hot, and also it would make it even better when he started putting the moves on scribe!Patrick. Because it's wrong because, well, vows of chastity!, but also because it's a dude in a dress and Patrick likes it way more than he has any right to.

I kind of want this to exist now. *facepalms*

Linzee

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
No, no! No need for facepalming. This story is, like, educational. With all its medieval-y stuff. *nods seriously*

Also, I've got to vote for Pete in a dress. Because...that's just what I do when I get a vote. And I love the idea of poor conflicted Patrick, trying to be true to his vocation as a monk, but finding it really hard not to notice how Pete's big horsey grin is kind of endearing and the way the line of his gown accentuates his slinky boy hips.

I'm definitely planning to try it once I actually commit to writing again. It seems like it was made with me in mind!

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I wrote almost 3700 words yesterday, and I didn't even hate doing it! I'm going to try again today and see if the magic lasts.
