Jane Austen + Bandom = Insanity?

I'm watching Pride and Prejudice tonight (the Colin Firth version, naturally), and of course I'm always thinking about Pete and Patrick, and the two things started mingling together in my head. So now I'm trying to figure out how I could make a Pete/Patrick P&P AU work.

I'd want it to be set in modern times, a loose adaptation, like Clueless of Emma. Patrick would be Elizabeth and Pete would be Mr. Darcy.

I'm thinking that Pete has made it big in Arma, but then the band breaks up, and he comes back to Chicago to regroup. He meets Patrick on the local music scene, and Pete is a bit of a big-headed jerk at first. Mostly because he's just in a really foul mood that his band broke up just as they were getting popular.

Patrick overhears Pete telling someone that he can't believe that Patrick, this nerdy teenager in argyle and dark socks, is the musical wunderkind he's heard so much about. Patrick just rolls his eyes and writes Pete off as a dismissive jerk and goes on doing his thing.

Then Pete hears Patrick play, and he's intrigued. He starts to pay more attention to Patrick, liking what he sees. One day at some get-together at some musician's house, Patrick has enough beer to oblige them when people encourage him to sing. Pete just stares. He's a total goner. Of course, it's crazy that he wants to build his new band around this nerdy teenager, but he can't get over the idea. He really wants Patrick to be his singer. (And hey, he also wants to sleep with him.)

Just as Pete is coming to this realization, Patrick meets someone Wickham-like from Pete's past. I don't know who. But this person should also be in a band. The person tells Patrick some story about some wrong Pete did him (or her) and also charms Patrick, comes on to him. Patrick, of course, already doesn't think too highly of Pete and believes the lie.

Maybe there's some kind of band showcase at a local club or something. This would be the counterpart to the Netherfield Ball. Patrick is really looking forward to seeing his new crush there, but he doesn't end up showing. Patrick feels sure this is because of Pete, and he dislikes Pete even more for it. Pete is kind of oblivious about Patrick's dislike, and he keeps pursuing him, trying to chat him up, insisting that Patrick play a song with him.

I have no idea what to do with the Jane/Bingley plot, so I'm not sure how Pete ends up leaving Chicago. But. Somehow he goes.

Then I'm thinking Patrick goes to summer camp (the counterpart to the trip to Kent). It's a music camp for kids, and Patrick is a counselor. I'm not sure what to do with the Lady Catherine character. She's too much fun not to try to include. Maybe the man/woman who started the camp is...a music company exec? Or agent? Or something like that. Really bossy. Pete shows up, surprising Patrick. Every summer he comes for a few days to hang out with the kids and encourage them to follow their dreams. He's naturally thrilled to find Patrick there, and seeing him again rekindles all the old feelings. Pete makes his move, coming onto Patrick and telling him that he wants Patrick to be his singer. Patrick rebuffs him, bringing up the thing about the Wickham-like character.

Pete sends him a volley of rambling emails explaining what really happened with the Wickham-like character. As Patrick thinks back on it, he can see inconsistencies in what the other guy had to say. Patrick grudgingly believes Pete.

(Hmm. I really do need to figure out something for the Jane/Bingley subplot.)

The visit to Pemberley...I'm thinking maybe a school trip or something (maybe Patrick needs to be in college for this not to be creepy) to Pete's studio. Patrick wasn't really paying attention to where they were going, because school trips are always lame, and then when they end up there, he tries to make up an excuse about why he has to leave, but his teacher/professor won't let him. He asks the receptionist if Pete is there, and she says no, he's out of town. Patrick can breathe again, and actually starts to enjoy himself. The studio is state of the art, and Patrick's opinion of Pete goes up a couple of notches.

Pete shows up while the tour is still going on. Patrick is mortified. But Pete is totally cool. He's really nice to the group. Shows them around personally, answers questions, is totally charming, flashing smiles at Patrick the whole time as if to say, "This is all for you." Pete gets Patrick alone and offers him an internship if he wants it. Patrick can't resist the opportunity to come back to the studio. He and Pete fall into an easy rapport, and Patrick discovers that Pete is actually a pretty cool guy. And, okay, he's hot, too. Eventually, they end up making out in Pete's office.

That's when Patrick gets an emergency text message. Although I have no idea what the counterpart of the Lydia/Wickham storyline is.

This is actually a big problem, since the whole resolution hinges on Pete doing a good deed and showing how much Patrick means to him. Hmm. *ponders*

Anyway, in the end, Pete shows up at Patrick's house, and they have an awkward conversation. And finally, Patrick drags Pete up to his bedroom and kisses him. They make out or maybe have sex. And Pete asks Patrick to be his singer. And Patrick says yes.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER!!!!!

Hee! I appreciate the enabling, Mads. :)

(Also, mmmmm Mr. Darcy icon.)

I approve sooo hard of this plot bunny, you have no idea! Write it! :D

(maybe Patrick needs to be in college for this not to be creepy

I think it would be better if Patrick is in college xD

And they should have sex. Seriously.

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Yes, college. Definitely. Much less creepy.

I'm going to give this some more thought. If I can figure out the problems with the plot, I will probably have to write it. Then I'll have an excuse to read the book again and write down all the quotes I want to make bandom versions of. :)

Jane Austen is hard to resist! :)

I think someone wrote a P&P Pete/Patrick fic. I remember one in any rate. Of course, you should totally write one, too!

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, man. I should have known one already existed. Pretty much everything does in this fandom! *g*

I guess I'll see if I can track down the story, and if my idea is different enough, I'll still write it. If I can figure out how to solve the plot problems I have, that is.

[identity profile] jankato.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds superb. Your outline gave me lots of ideas.

What do you think about Hey Chris for the Wickham role? When he and Pete had a falling out IRL, he posted some pretty negative thoughts about Pete's character on his blog.

Perhaps the Bennett sister counterparts could be Patrick's classmates or bandmates. "Jane" falls for one of Pete's entourage and the Lydia character could have drug or alcohol problems and somehow Pete is instrumental in saving hm/her.

And please don't forget Mr Collins! Surely there would be people developing inapproriate crushes on Patrick.

Could Lady Catherine be Pete's manager, who has other plans for Pete's future and sees Patrick as a distraction and a threat to his vision?

Take or leave those ideas, but please, please, please write P&P with PxP.

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
These are great ideas!! Thanks so much.

I did think about Hey Chris for Mr. Wickham, but Wickham is such a villain in the book. It makes me a little uncomfortable to hang that on Chris (or any real person, for that matter). But of course, I can change the story, make it more of a misunderstanding or something. Or I could just get over it and make Chris the villain! *g*

And yes, I was thinking that sisters = friends (who are also musicians) and marriage = finding the right band (and the right bandmate to have sex with *g*).

I like the idea of "Jane" falling for someone in Pete's entourage. Pete has his own label, and maybe "Bingley" is in one of his bands. He meets "Jane" and becomes instantly smitten, wants to bring "Jane" into the band. "Jane" is so starstruck that s/he goes overboard trying to play it cool. This leads Pete to believe that "Jane" doesn't real want it enough, doesn't have the commitment, and he advises "Bingley" to look elsewhere for a new bandmate.

That works, I think. Then Patrick can get all upset over how Pete has ruined "Jane's" chance of happiness. And Pete can take another look at "Jane" and "Bingley" together and realize they're meant to be and tell "Bingley" to go for it.

I also like the idea of Pete's manager being "Lady Catherine."

And hee! Yes, yes, you're right. We definitely need a Mr. Collins. That may have to be an original character. I don't think I feel comfortable saddling anyone in the bandom universe with that role!

I'm thinking Patrick and his friends are in the music program at a small college. Maybe one of their professors/head of the music program could be the Mrs. Bennet character, with good intentions, but inappropriate and embarrassing in his/her enthusiasm to get them all into successful bands.

Thanks for brainstorming with me!!

[identity profile] margueritem.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Jane/Bingley -> Jon/Ryan!!! or Jon/Spencer or Jon/Brendon. Since Panic would be on Pete's label and Jon could be Patrick's friend. And he's always laid-back and cool about everything, only when he doesn't get into the band he's all :-(

[identity profile] jankato.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that Jane/Bingley subplot works.

So what have you come up with for "Lydia?" How about "Lydia" does something that puts the whole music program in jeopardy? Perhaps she's an aspiring pop princess who steals someone else's material and passes it off as her own? Or, she's hiding some deep dark secret, something hyperdramatic, but I'm not sure how you'd make that a crisis for Patrick.

I'm really invested in this story now - you will be writing it, won't you?

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Lydia" is tough. I do like the idea of someone being accused of stealing a song. I was thinking maybe that's even what "Wickham" accuses Pete of. As for "Lydia," I like your idea about someone having a drug and alcohol problem. I was thinking maybe "Lydia" is the younger sister of someone in the music program. She's always tagging along, wanting to be part of things, wanting to be in a band, too. Somehow she meets up with "Wickham," and he tells her all kinds of seductive things about how he could make her a star, and convinces her to run off with him to L.A. Hmm. Maybe something like that.

Anyway...I do really want to write this. Someone else mentioned that there is already a Pete/Patrick P&P AU, so I'm going to try to track that down and make sure the story I want to tell is sufficiently different. But barring some huge coincidence, I'm going to start rereading the book and making notes of quotes I want to bandom-ize. :)

Thanks again for your help!

Your brain is just awesome. STOP MAKING ME WANT TO READ BANDOM. ;)

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! How can you resist Jane Austen? :)

[identity profile] anitac588.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my, I am not in bandom, you know that, I am *not*, like not even tempted, but this, this is so utterly fantastic and you should, so should continue to think about this.

(BTW - something is in the air, bc I've been watching P&P - BBC and 2005 movie - a lot lately)

I so hope that we share a fandom again, soon. I mean, I so crave for a story from you. Is there no inspiration in the baseball area? For example how Jeter comes to visit Alex while he is recuperating from his operation or dunno, sees Alex's photos of checking himself out in the mirror (the ones Punny linked to) or something?

Again, this is good, soo good.

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Jane Austen is pretty much impossible to resist, I think. I watched the entire BBC version yesterday, and I kind of have a hankering to watch it again today. Or maybe I really just need to pull out the book and read it. Maybe it's spring that puts us in the mood for this story, because it's just so romantic!

I also hope we're in a fandom together again soon, Anita! I miss squeeing with you. I keep hoping to get interested in a new TV show, but nothing has hit me so far. At least not in a fannish way.

Probably, though, I will write some more A-Rod/Jeter during the baseball season. Right now, A-Rod is rehab-ing from an injury, so he and Jeter aren't in the same place. But when he's back in the lineup, I'm sure there will be new canon. And I'll have inspiration to write! :)

[identity profile] rain-dances.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTP. I want a P&P Pete/Patrick fic so baaaaaad. I have been thinking this for awhile now. The Bingley/Jane thing is difficult...it's sort of necessary to the plot, but I'm running a blank on who they would be!

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
As my friend Anita said, Jane Austen makes everything better! And, for my part, I think Pete and Patrick make everything better, too. So, really, it's just a thing that NEEDS to exist!

[identity profile] tehomet.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Great idea. Even the outline is fun to read.

The PATD gentlemen could be useful as your Jane and your Bingley. Possibly.

May I ask, when you're writing a story, do you normally outline it first, or do you plunge straight in?

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you like! I've been thinking about it more this morning, and I really might want to write it.

And yes! Thank you for the idea. I do think PATD could help me with my Jane/Bingley problem.

As for my writing process, yes, I do pretty much always have an outline. When I first get a flash of inspiration, it tends to be really detailed, and I write down as much of that as I can. Then I try to solve any plot problems. I really need to know how the whole story goes before I start writing. And then, of course, while writing I change my mind about things. But my stories usually come out pretty close to the outline.

[identity profile] tehomet.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Re: writing process. Thanks for that. It's interesting. I miss the days of DVD commentaries to the tell you the truth. :)

klsdfj oh god, Bandom totally is not my fandom of choice at all. BUT HOW CAN I RESIST THIS? Jane Austen makes EVERYTHING better :DDDDDDDDDDD.

I really really want to read this now heh

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really hard to resist Austen in any fandom, I think. Because yes! She does make everything better.

(I think I might actually write this... Oh, dear. *g*)

[identity profile] margueritem.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Wickham - how about that guy from... Taking Back Sunday? His names Adam, I'm pretty sure. Oh, and he climbs stuff and swings his microphone and said something about Patrick once and Pete fought for Patrick's honour! Or maybe just posted about it,

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I'll have to find out more about him. I mean, I've heard of Taking Back Sunday, but that's pretty much it.

Someone bad-mouthing Patrick is seriously not cool!

[identity profile] margueritem.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It stayed with me because Adam's friends (or acquaintances or something) with MCR, and there's the whole Summer of Like between Mikey and Pete. I read it in one of the primers, but which one? *scratches head*

I think Adam said that FOB had copied one of TBS's songs (the music) and Pete got defensive because who writes the music in the band? Patrick! Don't accuse Patrick of plagiarizing! >:(

[identity profile] margueritem.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
AHA! (http://riorhapsody.livejournal.com/277015.html#cutid1)

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent! Thank you! I'll go have a look...

[identity profile] inteligrrl.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think to make this effective (but not geographically accurate) you should include the Panic boys. Brendon can be Lydia, and he accidentally wandered off with... I don't know, maybe that creepy dude from She Wants Revenge - Or GABE! We need to rescue him from Gabe's basement (Or maybe from Chris, who is using Gabe's basement!). I don't know, but the entire idea is entirely too adorable.

Now I'm trying to make Ryan Ross Georgianna in my head, and it's kind of painful...

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I think you're right. I really do need the Panic boys in this. The problem is that I'm not really into the Panic boys. (Although I do realize this is pretty much bandom sacrilege to say!)

I have only the roughest sense of their personalities. Ryan Ross is kind of dramatic and likes scarves? Jon Walker is really laid back? Spencer gets compared to a girl a lot? Brendon... everyone really seems to like Brendon? That's all I've got. I guess I'm going to have to read some Panic fic.

The idea of any of them as Georgianna does make me laugh, though. And since Ryan and Pete are close, it makes a scary kind of sense!

[identity profile] emmyhildy.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm new...only just found Pete/Patrick a couple weeks ago, and only just read one of your stories (I Slept With Pete Wentz...) but I LOVE LOVE LOVE P&P, it's the greatest love story ever told, and I desperately want you to figure out how to get this down on paper. Because Pete and Patrick deserve a great love story. ;)

I like your style and really think you can do this. *tries to hold back excitement over plot so far* I'm an editor in RL and would be more than willing to help you out with anything involving this :D

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2009-04-23 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, welcome to the Pete/Patrick party! :)

I love P&P, too. And I definitely plan to write the P2 version of it, once I finish something else I'm working on. Thank you so much for your offer to help! I may well need a sounding board for ideas about the Lydia/Wickham plot. Still not quite sure what to do with that.
