I'm happy for all my HP-loving friends on their big day. But I feel a little left out on LJ today. So I thought of a game we Smallville peeps can play.

The Smallville Drabble-a-Thon

Our show offers so much to stir our drabble-writing imaginations, whether it's the long, lingering glances between Clark and Lex in pretty much every episode in S1, Pete checking out Chloe's ass in the rearview mirror in "Rush," or the Lionel-in-Clark lust for mamma Martha in "Transference."

Every episode of Smallville gives us something to write about, a missing scene to add, a wrong we'd like to right. So I propose a drabble-a-thon that does just that. Below you'll find a comment with the name of every Smallville episode that's ever aired. Choose one and write a drabble based on that episode. When you're done, leave it as a comment to the episode title. If you're having fun, do another one! My goal is to have a drabble for each one, so the drabble-a-thon will go on as long as that takes. *g*

Come on out and play! You know you want to. If you don't want to write a drabble yourself, have fun reading them and be sure and leave the authors some love in the comments to their drabble. And please, help spread the word!

And to my lovely HP friends, if you need a break, we'll be here.

ETA: By drabble, I mean something short enough to fit into the comments. It doesn't have to be exactly 100 words, although it can be, if that's what you prefer. Have fun with it!

Here's a running list of drabbles we have so far:
Pilot
Metamorphosis
X-Ray
Cool
Hourglass
Craving
Jitters
Rogue
Shimmer
Hug
Leech
Kinetic
Zero
Nicodemus

He wasn't the person Ryan had been expecting, but he appreciated the company. Anything to distract him from the doctors and the constant throbbing in his head. Closing his eyes, he listened to Lex read from his Warrior Angel comic.

Lex wasn't warm like Clark's mother, but he wasn't timorous like Ryan's aunt. Lex was complicated, dark and angry. And strong. Strong enough to go up against the likes of Dr. Garner and Mayor Tate.

"I'm sure Clark will be here very soon. I should let you get some rest."

Ryan opened his eyes. "Please stay. Just a little longer.

“Lana…” surprise drew her name into a question.

“I called you house,” she said hesitantly, “your mom said you were down here.”

As she came closer, Clark could see the light glinting off tears in her eyes. Tears for a boy she’d never loved enough. “I’m so sorry,” he said, knowing it was all he could say and never regretting it more.

The words broke her and she let out a choked sob. “I never should have sent that video.”

“No,” Clark said stepping forward, “don’t do that to yourself.” He knew the kind of guilt she was feeling. Knew it because he felt it everyday. Felt it then.

“He was missing in action,” Lana said looking up at him, looking so tragically beautiful he thought he would die. “Fighting for his life thinking that I wasn’t there: that I didn’t care,” her words broke on a whisper.

“It’s not your fault,” he said, knowing it wasn’t, and knowing she’d never believe it.

“It seems like every person that I’ve ever gotten close to leaves.”

“That’s not true,” he said knowing he should feel a slight stab of pain at her words. Knowing even now when she had come to him in pain for comfort that he would never be good enough.

“Yeah it is: my parents, Nell. Now Whitney.” She stepped closer again, the tears on her lashes glittering like diamonds. “I know I haven’t been a good friend.”

“No,” Clark protested immediately, “you’ve been a great friend.”

“No,” she said firmly, “I have doubted you, accused you of things and still you’re here. Protecting me,” the last said on a watery smile. “I don’t care if you have secrets, Clark. You are the one good constant thing in my life and I don’t want to lose you too.”

His arms went around her, wrapping her in his strength as her tears wet his shirt. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said, knowing he was already gone.

(I'm pretty sure that this makes no sense outside of my brain, so I apologise. :s)

The teacher sighed as she noticed that yet again, over half of her class were absent. It had been happening more and more frequently over the last few years, and it was wreaking havoc with her lesson plans. Some students failed to turn up more often than others, it was true, but even the most hardworking would sometimes have no explanations or excuses for missing lessons or not turning in homework. And while most of them would make up the lost days over the summer, there were others - most notable the over-worked farmer's children, but they weren't the only ones - who would end up being held back for yet another year.

so, this got just a lil' bit longer than a drabble, but i just went with it...

***

Clark reached the top of the steps to the loft and saw Lex asleep on the sofa, curled up under a blanket. He quietly crossed the room and sat down on the sofa next to him. He gently squeezed Lex’s shoulder.

Lex’s eyes flew open and he quickly sat up, as he looked around the loft. He seemed to get his bearings when his eyes rested on Clark.

“Clark,” he said softly. “What are you doing up here?”

Clark grinned. “I was about to ask you the same thing. I saw you weren’t in bed, so I came looking for you.”

“And just what were you doing in my room at three a.m.?” Lex asked, raising an eyebrow.

Clark could feel heat rush to his cheeks. “Um…”

Lex smirked, letting him off the hook. “It’s okay, Clark.”

Clark looked at Lex, seeing the shadows in his eyes, despite the smirk on his face. “I couldn’t sleep,” he said.

The smile seemed to slip off Lex’s face. “Neither could I.”

His gaze dropped to the floor, as Lex appeared to grow distant. Clark studied him. The last couple of days seemed to make Lex more fragile than Clark could ever have imagined seeing him before. Clark thought he looked pale, and he could see the darkness under his eyes. He reached out a hand and lightly touched Lex’s cheek, stroking down over his cheekbone to his jaw, then around to the back of his neck. Lex’s gaze snapped back up, bringing his attention to Clark’s face.

Clark leaned forward, pulling Lex toward him slightly. He grazed his lips softly over Lex’s. When he didn’t feel Lex pull away, he kissed him with more strength, slipping his tongue between Lex’s soft lips for a moment before pulling away. He looked into Lex’s clear blue eyes.

“I just want you to know, Lex, that you mean so much more to me than a brother,” Clark said quietly.

Lex was silent for a moment, looking back at Clark, before his lips formed a small smile. “I can’t tell you how happy that makes me, Clark,” he said, as he leaned in for another kiss.

Lex knows it’s not fair. He knows that. But he has a dynasty to think of, he cannot be the last of his kind. If anyone should be able understand this, it’s Clark. Of course, Lex could never say that to him, could never use that to make his case. What Clark doesn’t know won’t hurt him, be it Lex’s room of Clark’s secrets or how much he actually does care for Helen. So Lex lets Clark fuck him into the mattress all night long without asking how the hell he’s going to be able to walk straight down the aisle tomorrow – it is supposed to be a party after all.

Clark is visiting me again. Today he's wearing a three-piece suit and a pair of black framed glasses.

"You look ridiculous," I tell him.

He doesn't speak, just stands at the waterline, the waves never quite touching him. I turn my back on him while I root around under a fallen log, looking for lunch on my hands and knees. Today I know he's not real.

I go back to my fire, crouch, carefully feed it a dry branch. He sits cross-legged in the sand.

Today he isn't real, but tomorrow--

Clark watches me through the fire. I crawl closer.

A large hand struggles with the wrapping paper trying to hold it at bay while his other fingers fumbles with the tape trying to rip it from its holder. With that same hand, Clark carefully smoothes out the paper with his fingers before putting on the tape only to narrowly miss letting the paper slip from his grip. It always looks so easy when his Mother does it.

He inspects his work and decides it’s good enough. Blue foil paper with iridescent snowflakes scattered across it shimmering in the low light of the barn. Lost in thought, he barely registers the footsteps of his father climbing the stair.

“All done with wrapping?” Jonathan smiles as he gently lays his hand across Clark’s shoulders and squeezes.

Clarks takes one last look at the gift in his hand and places it on the table. “Yup. All done.”

Jonathan eyes the few gifts scattered across the table. “Need help carrying them down?”

“No, I got it Dad. Thanks.”

Clark’s attention is drawn back to the blue package and absently runs his fingers over it.

Jonathan notices and says, “Looks like you gave special attention to that one.”

“Huh? Oh. This is for Lex. I want to give this to him before he leaves town for Christmas vacation.” He slides his finger once more over the gift then moves to pick up the others.

Jonathan shifts uncomfortably next to Clark and drops his arms. The strain between Clark and Lex has become more frequent. And though in a way he’s relieved believing that Clark is finally getting to see the true Lex Luthor, he hates to see his son confused and hurt over the erosion of a friendship. I know it’s painful son but you have to know that Lex is dangerous and can’t be trusted. This will work out right in the end.

“Mind if I ask what it is?” he questions softly. He moves his hand toward the gift but stops short of picking it up.

Clark picks up the gift in question. It’s thin with a rectangular shape. He looks at it and begins to caress the shimmering stars with his thumb before he speaks.

“Remember a few summers ago when Lex showed up at the farm after he was rescued from the Island?”

Jonathan nods while watching Clark’s thumb move over the paper.

“I was so relieved that he was alive and safe. But between the auction and us packing up to move, I didn’t have to time go by and see him. I was packing the truck when he showed up.” Clark stilled. There was so much longing in his voice when he said, “I was so happy to see him. It almost felt like it hurt. Almost. And Lex looked just like I felt”

Clark cast a quick glance at his father then sighed and lowered the gift slightly as he turned to glance at the stars outside. He looked as though the key to what he wanted so badly could be found out there.

Jonathan felt a slight chill in his stomach and he willed his nerves to calm down. Clark turned back to face his Dad squarely before he continued.

“What I didn’t know was that Mom saw us and grabbed a camera. I found the pictures a few weeks ago. She took a few but I liked this one the best and had it framed.”

The picture was taken just as Clark and Lex were pulling away from their hug. They were still clinging to each other, reluctant to let go. But it was how they looked at each other that had taken Clark’s breath away. The sheer joy of being reunited was clear. But what he also saw was a longing in both of them that he wasn’t aware of or at least understood at the time. Clark wants that back in a desperate way. He just doesn’t know how to make it happen.

Clark rushes on. “I want Lex to remember that day and know that I remember too. I want…” He drifts off unsure now what he wants to tell his Dad. He grabs the rest of the small pile of gifts from the table and starts toward the stairs. He glances back at his Dad who looks stunned at his near revelation. Clark feels his cheeks begin to color and turns to go down the stairs.

“I’ll put these gifts under the tree and take Lex his gift before it gets too late. I’ll try to be home before dinner okay?” Clark doesn’t wait for an answer.

Jonathan watches his son descend the stairs and tries not to think about friendship, destiny and other things he just couldn’t wrap his mind around and heads for the stairs.

When Clark falls asleep that night, he dreams he’s back at the lake again.

Lana’s not there this time, and neither is Sarah, but as he stands on the pier and looks out over the water, he can feel as soon as he’s not alone.

“Come with me,” Lex says from behind him.

Clark turns around. The sun is shining and he’s hot in his clothes but Lex smiles at him, cool and knowing, and all of a sudden, Clark can feel a breeze.

“All right,” he says, and follows Lex to the car.

*

Of all the things that bugged Clark about his dreams with Sarah, it was Lex and the sword that bothered him the most. Lana at the lake, missing his history exam, Chloe ditching her Wall of Weird – Clark could deal with all of that, no problem. It was Lex finding out about him, Lex feeling betrayed, Lex’s eyes, the way they seemed to look right through him then, that had Clark reaching back into his dreams, trying to stop things. Change them.

He stands in front of the wall in Lex’s office and reaches out to touch the sword. Lex walks up and stands next to him. Clark can feel the heat of his body, can feel the slight pressure of Lex’s shoulder against his.

“Lex, I have to –“ The casing of the sword is cool and smooth under Clark’s fingers, and he remembers the way the metal broke against his skin. The way the sword flashed and cracked as it shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. He pulls his hand back and shoves it in his jacket pocket and turns to find Lex watching him carefully. “I have things to tell you,” Clark finally finishes saying.

He raises his chin and waits for Lex’s small nod. “I’m listening, Clark,” Lex says, and Clark takes a deep breath, and starts to talk.

He had tried it once, the old twelve-step, but he wasn't much good at surrendering to a higher authority, something every editor he'd ever had could vouch for. He remembered the old-timer sitting in the back of the church basement, gimlet-eyed, hazed with cigarette smoke, who had listened to his sad, sad tale. "Tough shit, kid," he had said. "Don't drink."

He bent to peer through the viewfinder and staggered a little. Bert the camera man didn't even bother to hide his contemptuous flinch. Clark's face in the window, scared and angry, leapt into focus.

"Tough--" he muttered, and bumped the camera. Bert swore. He didn't bother to say he hadn't had a drink.
