There have been a few things Lionel has said that have made me wonder. Of course, he's so full of bullshit it's hard to know what's real and what's invented! But it does seem possible that Lionel believes the brutality of his early life is, at least in part, what made him the man he is today (or...at least was before he went to prison!), and he doesn't want Lex's easy life to make him soft. So he supplies the brutality himself.
