It's refreshing to see it from this angle, where it's showing how much John cares that he forgives Rodney, not the usual view that he is evil for making Rodney work for it at all.
I wasn't in the fandom when Trinity aired, but later friends told me that this was reaction, and I was really surprised. As much as I love Rodney (and I really, really do!), he did break trust with John, the trust that they all have as teammates to look out for one another, and that would take some time and effort to mend.
