I've been working very hard this week, peoples. Much harder than usual! Tonight, I'm having dinner with [livejournal.com profile] bexless and [livejournal.com profile] barely_bean, so that will be good. Something to look forward to! But in the meantime, I need a break.

I didn't have time to do that "give me a title and I'll tell you about the story" meme, but I wanted to, and now I'm have time. Or, at least, I'm making time.

So:

Comment with the title of a story that doesn't exist, and I'll tell you about that imaginary story, maybe even write a little snippet. Feel free to include a fandom and pairing, any fandom, I'll figure something out.

Anyone else need a break on a Friday? Come out and play!

Devil in the Details - Dean/Sam

This is a perfect title for them! Okay, here's what I got:

This story is an angsty take on Bedazzled. It takes place around the time that Sam is 18, and he's desperately wishing for a normal life.

(It could be a slash or gen story. If slash, he and Dean have slowly become more and more physical with each other until Sam has to admit to himself that they're lovers, and he wants to leave behind that guilt. Or it could simply be that he's tired of the Winchester way of life, and he's been fighting more and more with Dean and his father.)

The devil makes her appearance, a character I'd probably write something like Ursula in my story "Such Sweet Ruin." Sam realizes who she is, and that she'll try to trick him, but he's desperate and he has the old Winchester confidence that he can ultimately prevail.

She gives him seven wishes, and each time, predictably, the devil is in the details. He wishes he could go to college and meet a girl and become a lawyer, and that ends with Jessica pinned to the ceiling in flames. When Sam gets furious with the devil, she just shrugs. "You said you wanted to *meet* a girl, you didn't say anything about happily ever after."

So Sam keeps trying. In one, he wishes that Dean had a normal life, figuring that would free him to do his own thing. Dean is an insurance salesman with a nagging wife, two difficult children, a pile of debt, and a sensible sedan that keeps breaking down on him. It's so souless and terrible that Dean drives his car into a tree on purpose to kill himself. That really pisses Sam off. The devil says, "Have you ever really paid attention to what people's normal lives are like?"

In another scenario, Dean died in the fire, and Sam's father killed himself not long afterwards, and Sam was raised in foster homes. In yet another, Dean's personality is completely different, utterly shallow, vain, a male model only concerned with being scene at the right places with the right people. The final straw is when Dean has somebody else for a brother, some insufferable Mary Sue type who does everything he's told, and Sam won't admit it but he's jealous that Dean seems to like that brother better than he does him.

Finally, it's down to his last wish, time to give up his soul, and Sam says very tiredly, "I just want Dean to be happy."

A selfless act, and that breaks the deal. Sam gets to keep his soul, goes back to his life. It's just the way he left it, Dean kind of wary after the fight they just had.

"You over being pissy?" he asks.

Sam nods.

"Good."

There's some brotherly banter, and Sam comes to the conclusion that his life isn't so bad after all.
