Can't Be
by Lenore

Disclaimer: Clark and Lex aren't mine. There. I've said it. Happy now?

Rating: R

Summary: In a different take on "Exodus," the ship has other plans for Clark, and a hapless Lex gets caught in the middle.

Warning: MPreg

Acknowledgement: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kormanfan for looking this over for me and giving me lots of encouragement. I really appreciate it!

Notes: I used to wonder why people wrote MPreg. Not that I objected exactly, but I just didn't get it. Now I understand. MPreg is like Mount Everest. It's just *there*.

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it. *g*

Sucrose Alert!: I am a hopeless fool for babies. Hopeless. I kid you not. This story has babies and lots of goopy hopeless fooldom. Don't say you haven't been warned!

Hey, I'm glad I'm not the only one! If you're going to be a hopeless fool for babies, it's good to have company. :)

this is exquisite!

I hope there's more to come of this - and even if there isn't, it's perfect. It's hard to keep characters true to themselves in mpregs. I believe you pulled it off here. I loved this story! Thanks so much for sharing it.

Thanks, Astrea! I'm so glad you liked it. :) And it's great to hear that you thought the characters stayed true to themselves. I was hoping, but wasn't sure.

Actually, I probably will write more in this universe at some point. I really do love babies!

Thanks, Lolita! I'm so glad you liked it. :) And, actually, I probably will write more at some point. I'm kind of living out my baby pangs through Lex. *g*

you really make lex's parent experience so compelling! i'm excited that there's likely more to come...you set up so many things that could be great material for the sequel -- lionel, helen, etc... plus ofcourse miranda and hannah surely will have much to say once they start talking :) i can't wait!

Wow. I really am your bitch. Until now, there's never been a M-Preg story I liked. But this.... I was blushing, giggling and smiling my face off. It's too cute. I LOVED schmoopy father!Lex. I especially loved:
"Lex laughs. "You just didn't like her, did you?" Miranda makes a noise that sounds like agreement. "Who's the smartest baby in the world?" He kisses the red peach fuzz on top of her head. "That's right. You are." He holds her up in the air and blows on her tummy. "You are." She laughs happily."

You *own* me.

Your Eternal Bitch and Undying Slave,
Raya

Awwwww! Thanks for the lovely feedback, Raya. *hugs* I'm so glad you liked schmoopy daddy Lex. And it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's a fool for a man with a baby!

This made me wish I had a baby and then I realized I have a 30 pound Collie puppy who still keeps me awake at nigth *G* and that's enough.

I so much enjoyed reliving the whole new parent thing through Lex. Your whole take on the episode was wonderful and I just wish the show could do something that made this much sense!

~squeals~ Collie puppy. When I was growing up, my aunt bred Collies. There is nothing cuter.

Thanks so much for the feedback on my story! I'm so glad you liked it. :) The whole idea did come from trying to figure out how to get Lex out of that plane crash alive. *g*

What a wonderful story! You made Mpreg work! This story was funny and touching and entertaining. I loved the way Lex was so protective of Miranda and Clark so tentative about Lex and his new baby girl.

Great job!

I'm so glad you liked it, Siobhan! I've always had this idea about Lex that he would be a loving and indulgent father, trying to be everything Lionel never was. And it gives me a big case of the "awwwwws!" *g*

ARGH!!!

Clark is WHAT!??? I was literally screaming at the monitor. Until I saw you'd posted it somewhere else too.

This is wonderful! I love it. I secretly love mpreg stories. Or not so secretly. But this is great! =)

And I'm so glad you liked it! Thanks!

Wheee! I giggled and laughed and even got a little misty once or twice. I enjoyed it. Yay for M-Pregs that just are! *g*

Hee! And the good thing about writing MPregs vs. climbing Mt. Everest? No fatal avalanches. *g*

I'm so glad you liked it, Rhi! Thanks!

This is wonderful! I read the full version on the other link you posted. I really liked the characterization. Any chance you'll be writing more stories in this universe?

From: [identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com
Thanks, Meret! I'm really glad you thought the characterization worked. Figuring out what a pregnant Lex would be like is kind of a shot in the dark. *g*

And, yes, I think I will write more of this at some point. I really am a hopeless fool for babies. :)

I thought I replied to this last night.

I loved this. I have a love/hate relationship with MPreg, and this is definitely one of the ones I love. :D

Thanks so much, Aly! I know what you mean about MPregs. I've never felt the desire to write one before, but this idea would not leave me alone. I'm so glad you liked it! :)

This was such a fun story to read. Really well thought out and delightfully told. I usually avoid Mpreg stories like the plague, but seeing as *you* wrote this one, I decided to make an exception and I was duly rewarded. *g*

I absoluted adore OverprotectiveLex. Sweet!

Hey, Anne! Thanks for making an exception for me. I know MPregs are really not everyone's cup of tea. And I'm glad you enjoyed it! And I really do think Lex would be just that overprotective if he had a daughter. :)
