Hmm. Well, my reaction to this episode up until the last two minutes was kind of, "whatevers." I think that's just because the last few episodes have been so heavily concentrated on Sam and Dean and their connection and their grief, and this was more focused on the case. Now, I realize that the case had parallels to Sam and Dean, but still there was a lot of time spent on the other characters. And I was like: other characters, what's up with that? I've forgotten how to care about other characters. (Unless they're vampires with a heart of gold or Mrs. Robison-esque roadhouse owners having hot sex with the boys, naturally.)
So since I don't really have that much to say of any substance, I present the first fifty-odd minutes of the episode in quotes and questions:
"You want to go pay your respects to a slab of granite put up by a stranger?"
Why have Sam and Dean never met their uncle? I mean, if Mary was important enough to him that he put up a pretty nice looking headstone, why does he have no relationship to her children? Was it just the fact of their lives? John couldn't afford to let them get close to anyone in the mainstream world for fear that people might try to interfere? Because he does put them in danger. It's really not the life for little kids. Or did Mary's family never like John? Was there always a streak of stubbornness and obsession running through him that made them wary? It would be interesting for Sam and Dean to meet their uncle now. Especially interesting if she reminded Dean of Mary. I hope we hear more about the uncle.
"Stuck with those people, making awkward small talk until you show up, no thanks."
Dean's hesitant to go to the roadhouse by himself? Okay, now I have ALL kinds of ideas about what happened between Dean and Ellen when Sam and Jo weren't looking. Hee.
Aside: Awwww! Sam buried his dad's dog tags at his mom's grave. He's a tender-hearted boy.
A question that has been plaguing me:
Why does Sam wear only plaid now? Does that somehow play into his possible half demon-hood? Is plaid the work of the devil?
"Don't get too excited, you might pull something."
*snickers inappropriately*
"Awkward."
*snickers appropriately*
"You talk, we listen. You know, maybe throw in a little therapeutic collage. Whatever helps jumpstart the healing."
Oh, Dean. Baby. You missed your true calling. Grief counseling. Um…yeah.
"Since when are you afraid to get dirty?"
*back to snickering inappropriately*
"I can take care of myself, thanks."
"No, you can't! And you know what? You're the only one who thinks you should have to."
My heart made a little whimpery sound here. It really did!
"It's got unrequited Ducky love written all over it."
*goes all nostalgic* Also, I really have to laugh at Dean for making a "Pretty in Pink" reference. Hee.
"It takes two to, you know, have hard-core sex."
*back to snickering*
"I figured you were more her type. You know, she had pretty crappy taste in guys."
Oh, the one-lining love of brothers.
And then we get that final conversation that tore the heart right out of my chest. Damn. Jensen knows how to play us, doesn't he? I don't have anything insightful to say about it. Just, "ow." I don't know how Dean is going to shoulder that kind of guilt.
And then! There's the preview for the upcoming ep, and now I'm expecting my heart to get torn out of my chest all over again next week. But maybe Dean will come to see that he had a very important purpose in coming back, to talk Sam down off the ledge about the visions and the demon's purpose, because he's the only person in creation who can do it.
Oh, boys! That's just going to be my mantra from now on.

Was i the only one that wanted Sam to pull Dean close and just hold him (not that Dean would let him, well, at least not for very long and not without covering the moment with some smartass comment).
peace,

*laughs and laughs*
Well, thank you for breaking my intermittent crying jag. *g*
Poor Dean. The guilt that's been eating him up...Sam wasn't ready for that. Such an awesome ep.

I think you should write that ficlet! Hee-hee. Rather than hunting, Dean took to psychology and often practices on Sam.

Dean totally cried at the end of that movie! You so know he did!
