I don't usually comment on politics here in my LJ, but I will say that I was incredibly disturbed by the recent Supreme Court decision upholding an abortion ban that has no provision for the health and safety of the mother, against the advisement of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists--you know, actual doctors. So if you're in the U.S. and are concerned about our eroding reproductive rights, I urge you to take part in National Call-In Day to Support the Freedom of Choice Act. I just did. Follow this link to NARAL, and they give you all the information you need to find your elected representatives, so you can tell them how you feel:

Please pass it on, if you're so inclined.

Thanks for posting this. I was surprised not see more outrage about this Supreme Court decision.

Did you read Justice Kennedy's comments about us poor, tiny-brained women who may have one of these terrible procedures and be too ignorant to know what we're doing and then we may regret it later so Big Daddy government has to protect us from our own stupidity? GRRRR! And then Justice Ginsberg responded by saying "You obsolete, paternalistic fucker!!!" Or maybe I'm paraphrasing there. So anyway, yeah, I'm upset about this.

*nods* I was surprised as well. Although, frankly, I was just too angry about it for days and days afterwards to be able to talk about it. So I thought maybe other people felt that way, as well.

And, yes, I did read Justice Jackass' comments that read like something out of the 19th century. And, oh my God, I've always thought Justice Ginsberg was the coolest, but I think I actually pumped my fist when I read her response. Your paraphrasing comes VERY close to what she actually said.

I was going to post about it when I read the NYT article, but I've been a little spazzed about work lately and I'm having trouble thinking straight. Now I can't find the article :( I hope this mobilizes people who have been complacent.

FYI, when you click on that link it has your signed in name on the page. I'm not sure if you want that showing. If you take the "keug5u..etc" stuff off the end of the link, it's a fresh non-logged in page.

Thank you for linking this, I emailed this to all my sisters and friends and I plan to call in a few minutes. The more support, the better.

Thanks for catching that! It's not actually my name. It must be someone from Salon. That's where I first found the link and followed it. Fixed now!

I'm so glad you're passing it on!

Fucking anti-choice campaigners. I'm glad I'm in the UK.

Good luck to the US sisters

I read about this and was absolutely livid. Thank you for the link I have emailed everyone I can, though I have little faith it will do much in my state.

I think I might sound a little angry, but I'm proud of what I came up with so wanted to share in case anyone else needed help with something to say:

I am writing this letter to let my local representatives know my displeasure as a voting America at the recent Supreme Court decision upholding a ban on the intact dilation and extraction abortion method.

This ban offers no provision for the safety and health of a pregnant woman. Such an over site is demeaning to women in general and is morally repulsive.

The implications are that women have, again been relegated to second class citizen status, and that their entire worth rest simply is in their ability to procreate.

In my opinion such a ruling is tantamount to saying that if a woman cannot give birth and requires and abortion to save her life, then she is better off dead.

I vote in every election, I am educated, and I am a woman. I read the news on a regular basis. I keep abreast of what is occurring in my state, and my country. With that being said, I want to let you know that when the next election is held I will keep in mind those who support women’s reproductive rights, not to mention their right to valid and essential health care. I guarantee that any representative who cannot see the fault in this ban, and who does not attempt to resolve it will not receive my vote.

Thank you for your time,
B
