I've been having this conversation lately with fangirl friends about how nothing is really lighting the old fannish fires lately. And it made me wonder: What is everyone else watching? What are other people fannish about? So...a poll! Feel free to give details in the comments.

I am rewatching Alias right now for some reason! And I picked pining for John and Rodney, as there was no "stupid boys being dorky and then realizing they are MFEO in addition to being BFF!" But pining would obviously factor in, so it's all good. ;)

I should check out Alias. I don't know why I never watched it. I'm sure I'd like it!

Merlin would be a short period of pining, then coming to grips with the fact that Merlin's a serf and a magician, then domestic bliss and curtains and adventures. Then some jealousy because Arthur is going to have to marry a girl at some point.

Date: 2008-11-25 06:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
Yes, but if Arthur follows tradition he'll be marrying an AWESOME girl. So there's that. :)

(And okay, now I think I want to see Gwen finding out that her husband and the court magician are having an affair and wanting to join in. 'Cause I firmly believe she's just that cool.)

I put down Soap Opera slash even though my boys aren't on right now (well, one of them is, the other's doing a concert tour or a play or something for the next two months so no gay German boys for me), and there wasn't a Whatever Competitive Reality Show Bravo's Currently Airing category so I was stuck. :) (Right now, that's Top Chef, which thanks to PR sucking during the last season has become the best show they've got, hilariously enough.)

I had dinner with a fangirl friend of mine last night who's into Top Chef. I've never seen the show. Although I do find the guy on it rather attractive. :)

I am never caught up on TV, so it's hard for me to be fannish without getting tragically spoiled. Still, I find myself really wanting a lot of Chuck/Blair Gossip Girl love/hatesex. I also have lots of Office stuff bookmarked and annotated with "read after watching ep xxx". And I'm not watching SGA, but I'm still reading it with great enjoyment, which has always been how my fannishness for that show has been expressed.

I'm a little fannish about Twilight right now, in that I like talking and laughing about it, but have yet to see the movie. Also, I only *barely* made it through just the first book.

Date: 2008-11-25 07:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com
Mmmm. I love Blair/Chuck. They're pretty much why I watch the show. I'm also not really watching SGA, probably because I know it's ending, but John and Rodney still have a warm place in my heart.

I totally forgot about Twilight! I should have put that in the poll. And True Blood, too. Oi, my memory!

I predict the Next Big Slash Thing will be "Merlin". It has a high squee-per-ep rating right now, I observe.

I predict Merlin will be decent sized, but no bigger than Torchwood.

You know, I'm not sure I feel fannish (in the zomg, must take part!) sense about anything. I could go there with Merlin, but they, er just irked me with an episode and I have to fanwank it before I can be, same goes for SCC. I keep getting hung up on whether or not a movie character will be part of the mythos and...It's one of those splinter type annoyances that you can't really ignore.

A friend and I were discussing that the other day. The fact that we're not heavily hooked into one thing right now. I still have my long term interests that I have fondness for, like I plan on picking up a McShep genderbender after I finish NaNo and my NaNo is a fannish one (Indiana Jones/SPN for the win) but...I'm not in the fannish love stage. Nothing's really grabbed me for it lately and the same goes for her.

I hate this stage. I generally have a bunch of fandoms I'm hooked into at any one time and, right now, I have none that I'm in that stage with an it's annoying.

As for the subtext becoming text. ERR. I kinda like dramatic domestic. Matt/Mohinder from Heroes S2 but with actual on screen sexing? That'd be it for me right there. I can't go in for cloying fluffiness, but overblown subtexty melodrama drives me nuts too so...happy medium it seems.

From: [identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com
I feel much the same way you do. No real and true fannish love of the moment. I mean, I am having an affair with bandom, but the fandom is really too young for me, so there's only so long that can last. And I still have a fondness for John and Rodney, but I can't remember the last time I actually watched an episode of SGA. I'm loving Supernatural this year, but I don't read fic or post about episodes. I have been enjoying Merlin, and I'd probably be more into it if I didn't have to download episodes.

I keep hoping some bright, new slashy show will come along!

I think you missed Dexter and How I Met Your Mother. Also, alphabet makes things easier :) And, did you know that you can put more than 15 choices in a poll if you do it manually (ie, edit the code)?

I defined fannish as "any show I watch regularly" and/or "any show I read fanfiction from authors not on my flist". ie, those are not necessarily overlapping - I read Smallville fic but have never even seen a scene and Pushing Daisies is one of my favourite shows but I haven't sought out any fic.

My ideal onscreen romances are long periods of happiness with short periods
of angst.

Ok I like your answer for fannish as the 'any show I watch regularly'.

I asked for a definition of fannish, because I'm not following any fandom right now, and didn't know if I should answer them as 'shows I watch more times than not'. Half the shows I watch I download.

Before I can answer, can you explain what you mean by fannish?

Do I watch some of those shows? yes
Am I rabid about watching some of those shows? no
Do I read fic of some of those shows? yes
Am I rabid about reading fic from those shows? no
Do I have OTP and no other can do? no

I am kind of fandomless, and have been since my break up with SV during season 4. There is no one show out there that I just have to watch or read about.

The show I love most these days is Dexter. It has interesting characters, continuous storytelling, people of colour, women in positions of power, not to mention the awesomeness of being encouraged to identify with a serial killer.

I was mentally going through the TV schedule in my head, and I completely forgot all shows on premium channels. Oops! I selected 'pining' for the last question, because I was obviously thinking about John and Rodney and pining!John is my faaaaaavorite. Of course, I'd love to see the pining end eventually and have some happy. :)

Smallvilee is sort of luring me back also I never tire of Harry Potter because talk about some grown-up with issues for days that you can play with . . .
Okay Gossip Girl pretty much owns me I started watching to mock it but to my surprise the subtext on this show blew me away. It's smarter than it ought to be and the pretty boy sort of suckered me in. So yeah that's my main right now. The Chuck/Nate is just . . . reminds me of the golden days of clex. SPN is back in my good graces and Fringe is really good. I'm digging the characters and love the father-son stuff with Walter and Peter. It's really interesting to see their issues play out little by little. Ditto the growing UST between Peter and Olivia. My PB love has been rekindled and well Michael goes with everyone.

I was totally into the Chuck/Nate when I first started watching GG, and then it kind of dimmed there for a bit while Chuck and Nate were on the outs, but the most recent episode, that was a Chuck/Nate bonanza! I was really enjoying it. A lot. :)

And I'm with you on Fringe, too. Pete/Olivia is probably my favorite pairing on TV right now.

I am so far behind on television right now that I'm kind of in fannish limbo. I am still all about the Chuck/Bryce and I am still madly in love with Generation Kill. I am hoping to get into Merlin... I have the first four episodes downloaded. I need crack in my life and it sounds like the perfect crack.

As for the epic love story, there needs to be lots of rescuing each other and being super protective of one another.

Even though SGA is pissing me off, it's still buried deep in my heart, like a splinter of naquada (how's that for a simile?). And though I wouldn't really like to see my OTP (John/Rodney) become canon because those moronic SGA writers would fuck it up, in my head it would go like this: they're best friends, the closest friend the other's ever had, they love each other, never leave each other, until one day, when they're a bit older and more tired, Teyla confronts them, hands on hip, and they go: Oh. Uh. Can we have a moment?

And it's happily-ever-bantering ever after. The End.

And it's happily-ever-bantering ever after. The End.

*claps wildly* That's EXACTLY the story I want. *sighs happily*

I haven't really been watching SGA lately. The fact that it's been canceled probably has a lot to do with that. But I still adore John and Rodney. When I want to read a story about characters who just really, really love each other, I still turn to SGA.

Friday Night Lights is the other thing I am fannish about these days. It is so good OMG. \o/

And if I could see John and Rodney's great epic gay love story as text rather than subtext -- well, first of all I'd want one of US to write it, because I do not trust the writers of that show. *g* I would want pining and THEN bliss. With curtains and snark and sex. (Actually, very like Eric and Tami Taylor's relationship on FNL, only, you know, with Rodney and John.)

This was difficult! I'm very fannish about some things, sort of fannish about others, and vaguely fannish about yet other shows. But even ones that I'm fannish about to the extent of reading or writing in the fandom, I'm not necessarily actually keeping up with! And then there are shows like Fringe that I watch, and have written in, that at the same time I'm not taking even vaguely seriously - I just watch it for a couple of characters I like! So I'm not sure if that counts as particularly fannish or not. *g*

I forgot to fill in the last box, because EUREKA!!! Whee. I don't read much fiction in the Eureka fandom though, because the big slash pairing leaves me cold, and there's not a lot of gen in the fandom. But I do love that show. And Friday Night Lights! <333

Date: 2008-11-25 08:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com
"Fannish" is such a vague phrase. I'm completely arbitrary in how I apply it to what I watch. I'd say I am fannish about Fringe, because I ship Peter/Olivia. I'm not fannish about Life, even though I think it's a good show and I watch it faithfully, because I don't really talk about it on LJ. But I would say I'm fannish about Merlin, even though I still have a backlog of eps to watch.

Oh, Eureka! I can't believe I forgot that. I really enjoy that show, although I don't think I've ever read any fic.
