2024 Dear Yuletide Author
Oct. 12th, 2024 11:05 amAO3 name: Lenore
Able to receive treats: Yes
ETA: I'll be visiting family for the holidays and may not be able to read and comment on my story right away, but I will just as soon as I can.
First, thank you so much for writing for me, dear Yuletide Author! I offered up some prompts in my signup in case that helps to inspire you, but please don’t feel constrained by that. Let your imagination run free!
Here are a few general notes about what I enjoy in stories:
I have a very broad range of enjoyment. I like slash (both dudes and ladies), het and gen, and I will happily read any rating. I love relationship stories that show the deepening sense of intimacy between two people, whether it's a romance or a friendship. I also adore plotty stories, casefiles, action/adventure, future fic, backstory, and my great love for fan fiction cliches never dies! I appreciate angst in a story, especially if the source material really calls for it, but I also enjoy when a story ends on a hopeful note.
A few things I don’t want are: non-con and dub-con, as well as graphic violence and gore if they are out of keeping with the source material. I'd prefer not to receive a crossover or a totally non-canonical AU unless I note otherwise in the specific fandom details. However, I’m cool with canon-divergent AUs.
DEVIL JUDGE: Kang Yohan, Kim Gaon, Kang Elijah
So, the Live Court cases are all well and good, but the reason I love this show is the insanely hot vibe between Ga On and Yo Han and the found family dynamic among Ga On, Yo Han, and Elijah. I ship Yo Han and Ga On and would love a slashy story, but if that’s not your thing, I’d also adore a story that explores a deepening platonic connection between them. I’m good with a canon-consistent level of them being an emotional disaster, but I crave a happy ending. If you want to include characters I didn’t request, go for it, as long as the story is centered on Yo Han, Ga On, and Elijah.
DNW: Non-canonical suicidal ideation or attempts, stories about depression or mental health problems, abuse or violence between Yo Han and Ga On outside of what occurs in canon, alcohol or drug addiction, stories about Elijah walking again, extreme AUs set outside the world of the show, A/B/O.
Some prompts for inspiration…
Domestic scenes: I will adore any fluff you want to write, give me all the Ga On in cozy sweaters cooking dinner, Elijah making wisecracks, and Yo Han struggling not to show how much he loves every moment of it you can possibly stand.
Canonical AUs: What if…
-Ga On has precognition or telepathy or some kind of secret power he’s desperately trying to hide
-Yo Han saved his family from the church fire
-Yo Han was the one who saved Ga On as a teen after his attempt to harm himself
-Years ago, Ga On had a one-night stand with a devastatingly attractive older man and oops now that man is his boss OR they have some other non-sex-related embarrassing first meeting that makes things awkward
-Yo Han rescued Ga On from Sun Ah’s trap
Ga On turned down the Live Court job because he suspected something was off about Professor Min’s intentions<
Missing scenes/set during the timeline of the show:
-Fallout (preferably sexy) from one or more of those times when Yo Han throws Ga On up against the wall/bookshelves
-Yo Han tries his hand at cooking for Ga On and Elijah, and the attempt goes some sort of way
-Ga On is the one having nightmares for a change, and Yo Han does his best to help, but he’s very Yo Han about it
-Ga On finds out that Yo Han was drugged and abducted by Sun Ah
-Ga On finds out that Yo Han was shot by Sun Ah
Future fic/set after the show:
-Someone finds out Yo Han is still alive, and he and Elijah are in danger. Ga On rushes to protect them
-Someone from the Live Court days is out to get Ga On, and Yo Han and Elijah come to the rescue
-Yo Han is going out of his mind with boredom in Switzerland and Elijah enlists Ga On to do something about it before she has to commit uncle-icide
-Ga On is wearing himself out, fighting a never-ending battle against corruption. Yo Han and Elijah whisk him away on a dream vacation for some rest and relaxation
BEYOND EVIL: Lee Dongsik, Han Joowon
Oh, show of my heart! This is an amazing series that has really stuck with me—the characters, the writing, the amazing acting, ALL the angst. The enemies to allies to something so deep it can’t be encapsulated in a single word that happens between Dongsik and Joowon is just…truly no words! I definitely ship it and would love a relationship-y story, but if you’re not into that, I would equally love a platonic story about the complicated, deepening tie between them. I’m good with a canon-consistent level of angst, but would adore a hopeful ending. Feel free to include characters I didn’t request, as long as the story is centered on Dongsik and Joowon.
DNW: Please no suicidal ideation or attempts, abuse or violence between the two of them, stories focused on alcohol abuse, drug addiction or serious mental health problems (outside of canon), or A/B/O.
Some prompts for inspiration…
Canonical AU: What if it started differently…
-When Joowon meets Dongsik at the station, he has a flash of memory of meeting him when he was a child living with his family in Munju
-Reviewing the case file from 20 years ago, Joowon finds notes that lead him to believe someone had a personal grudge against Dongsik
-Joowon has a secret ability he’s never admitted to anyone: he’s a human lie detector (a la Poker Face)
-Joowon never became a cop, instead he’s a psychiatrist with a gift for criminal profiling
-Joowon has secret magical abilities. When he looks at the Manyang case file from 20 years ago, he senses a dark force at work and feels compelled to go investigate
Missing scenes/set during the timeline of the show:
-I would love a story about them comforting each other in their own awkward ways—after Chief Nam dies, after Dongsik finds his sister, after Joowon learns the truth about his father, after his father threatens to kill him. They have so much trauma. Show me how they help each other through it
-Related to my comfort kink, I also would dearly love any scene of them taking care of each other, in whatever way: cooking a meal, allowing a sleep over, tending to while sick/drunk/hung over, helping navigate germaphobia or chronic pain, assisting with moving house or redecorating in order to let go of the past, etc
-Then there’s the flirting. Putting aside shippy considerations, Dongsik does say some pretty provocative things to Joowon right from the outset, presumably to annoy and/or get him off balance. What is going through Dongsik’s mind in these moments? How does Joowon feel about it? What if Joowon tried to turn the tables? How awkward would that be?
Other ideas set during the timeline of the show:
-Joowon has night terrors/episodes of sleepwalking when he’s stressed out, Dongsik is surprisingly kind and helpful when he finds out
-Joowon is sure he’ll find answers in the reed field, but doesn’t consider how easy it is to get lost, fortunately Dongsik comes to the rescue
-Although he’ll never admit it, Joowon is in therapy for his germaphobia and has learned how to give massages as a desensitization exercise. When he gets tired of seeing Dongsik pop pills for his leg pain, he offers his help
-After a difficult day on the job, Joowon drinks too much at the butcher shop hangout and reveals things no one needs to know, especially not Dongsik
Future fic/set after the show:
-Dongsik doesn’t miss being a cop at all, but when Joowon disappears while working on a top-secret case, he starts his own investigation
-Things continue to be awkward between them after seeing other at Chief Nam’s memorial. Then Dongsik disappears, and it seems to have something to do with one of his old cases. Joowon is determined to find him and bring him home
-Dongsik has two houses, and both hold far too many painful memories. Joowon used to enjoy the stark, neutral vibe of his apartment, but now it just feels bland and empty. Could finding a place together be the solution to both their problems? Or the worst idea they’ve ever had?
-Any story where they’re together again and happy and preferably in love
AUs:
-After the Manyang murders were solved 20 years ago, Dongsik became a therapist, and Joowon is referred to him for counseling after something happens on the job
-Joowon hasn’t missed a day of work in…well, ever. When he’s forced to take a vacation, he somehow ends up at a guest house in a little backwater town run by the most annoying (and attractive) man he’s ever met
-Joowon is a cop. He hates magic, wants nothing to do with it, but when a series of high-profile mages die in mysterious circumstances, he has no choice but to accept help from Lee Dongsik, a complete lunatic of a mage who is the best—no, worst thing ever to happen to him
-Any scenario where Yu Yeon, Min Jung, and/or Chief Nam don’t die
ENCHANTED APRIL: Rose Arbuthnot, Lotty Wilkins, Caroline Dester, Mrs. Fisher
This movie is a beloved favorite that I watch every year in late winter when I desperately need a mental getaway. My favorite part of the movie is the earlier scenes when it’s just the four women at the beautiful villa, and I wish it had gone on longer. So, I’d really love a story that’s centered on the relationships among the ladies, whether it’s before Italy, during their stay, or afterward. That moment with Rose and Lotty on the terrace amongst the flowers had a lovely, romantic vibe to it, so if you’re feeling the femmeslash, I’d love to read it.
Characters to include: A story with all four of the women would be great, but I’d also be happy with a story centered on Rose and Lotty, wherever inspiration takes you.
DNW: Inclusion or mention of husbands
Some prompts for inspiration…
Before Italy:
-Missing scenes between Rose and Lotty as they run around London making arrangements for their travel
-Rose or Lotty starts to have second thoughts about the trip, and the other has to remind her why they desperately need to get away
-During the long hours traveling to Italy, Rose and Lotty confide in each other about their lives
During Italy:
Mrs. Fisher didn’t always walk with a stick. As the holiday unfolds, she amazes the other three women with tales of her remarkable adventures
-The ladies take a day trip to some nearby attraction and enjoy some new experiences
-As much as Caroline needs her rest cure, she does miss dancing. She convinces the other women to join her for an after-dinner twirl around the lounge
-The magic of San Salvatore helps each of the women discover a new talent, passion, or pursuit
-Lotty promised herself the holiday would start with a kiss. Maybe there’s another one?
After Italy:
Life after San Salvatore takes the women in different directions, but they stay connected with letters through the years
A month in paradise gave each of the women to think about what’s really important to them. How do their lives change once they’re back in London?
The women take an annual trip together to renew their ties, but with Mrs. Fisher’s increasingly fragile health, they all understand that this trip will be the last one they all take together
TAXI DRIVER: Kim Do Gi, Ahn Go Eun, Park Jin Eon, Choi Kyung Go
I love me some revenge drama, and this is one of my faves. I really enjoy the stylish, action-packed, team-centered dynamic of it, as well as the occasional comedic touches. Lee Jehoon playing various characters for the team’s revenge cons, especially Wang Taozhi, is sheer genius. But I also appreciated that the show was thoughtful about the consequences of seeking revenge and that the team changed its focus in season 2 to solving mysteries and getting justice. I adore all the characters on the show, so if you want to throw in Jang Sung Chul to have the full team in a fic, go for it, although obviously not necessary.
Characters to include: I would love either a team fic with all the requested characters or a story that centers on Do Gi and Go Eun. I ship the two of them, but if you don’t, a story about their platonic connection and deepening friendship would be lovely.
DNW: I’m fine with a canon-consistent level of violence, but please no excessive gore, sexual violence, betrayal among team members, or A/B/O.
Some prompts for inspiration…
Team fic:
-It’s been a long couple of years getting revenge and bringing criminals to justice. The team goes on a well-deserved holiday but something goes awry
-A new series of bestselling novels by an anonymous author seems to be based on the team’s cases. They have to figure out who is sharing their secrets
-Do Gi finally encounters someone who is able to best him, and the team desperately scrambles to save him
-One of the team visits their lost loved one’s grave, and the rest of the team comes along for support
-A new case has eerie parallels to what happened to one of the team’s loved one, and they all pull together to solve the case and help their teammate through this difficult time
-A team dinner at their favorite local restaurant turns into a robbery or hostage situation or some crime they have to stop
-Any story where Do Gi plays a hilarious character, bonus points if Wang Taozhi makes an appearance
Kim Do Gi and Ahn Go Eun:
-Do Gi likes having Go Eun’s voice in his ear. There’s an intimacy to it that makes him want to tell her things
-Do Gi and Go Eun decide they need some interest outside of work and pursue some hobby together
-For a case, Do Gi and Go Eun need to become competitive ballroom dancers
-The team has to infiltrate a knockoff handbag ring—enter Do Gi as Wang Taozhi with his new partner, a character played by Go Eun
-After the conclusion of a case in a lovely seaside setting, Do Gi and Go Eun decide to stay for a few days and relax
-Do Gi and Go Eun go undercover as a married couple and learn a lot about what it would be like if they actually lived together
-Go Eun works with Do Gi to help him get over his trauma response to whistling noises
