Yesterday was fangirl heaven!
Feb. 1st, 2008 01:55 pmSo much good stuff! I felt like I'd overloaded my squee circuit by the time I was finished.
First of all, I spent most of the day daydreaming about Firefly, which I really, really enojyed. A lot. Oh, oh, and I realized that my
picfor1000 story is going to be Mal/Simon, and I have a vague outline hashed out in my head. Whee!
Then, when I was finished (ostensibly) working, I watched "Safe" twice because honestly? I don't ever think I could see the end of that episode enough. When Mal and Zoe come striding out of the smoke? Eeeee! And Simon looks so astonished that they've come back for them. And the Mal-Zoe banter, which is in my opinion always the best banter on a show filled with really, really fabulous banter:
MAL
Well, look at this! Appears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
ZOE
Big damn heroes, sir.
MAL
Ain't we just.
And then later, when they're back on the ship, and Simon asks Mal why he came back for them, and Mal says, "You're on my crew." And Simon just can't comprehend it, because even his own father has abandoned them. Oh, my heart. Oh, how it breaks.
I know you guys probably can't tell, because I'm very subtle about it, but I LOVE ME SOME FIREFLY!!!!
Okay, so if that wasn't enough, then it was Supernatural night with a brand new, shiny episode. (Yes, I will be using the word "shiny" a lot!)
I have waited and waited and waited for this show to come back, and yay! Here it is! The beginning was way too gross for me not to look away from the screen, but then we got to the important brother stuff, and I was happy. My heart was obviously in the mood for breaking, but when Sam tells Dean he's trying to become more like him? *clutches chest* Then when he raced off to go shoot him some witches...just, wow. Dean is more bad-ass than Sam, but Sam is a hell of a lot scarier. You take the gloss of civilization off him, strip away his values, and he's not going to need any demon powers or demon blood to be incredibly dangerous. (And I really kind of love him a lot.)
The insight into Ruby was fascinating. I'm not sure whether I believe her or not, but if she is telling the truth, that's just incredibly poignant, a demon who remembers what it's like to be human. And oh my God! That final scene with Dean when he learns that he's not just going to hell, he's going to become what he hates, what he hunts down and kills. His face! His little face! Oh, my heart. And of course, Dean is going to be like Ruby. He'll remember what it feels like to be human. He'll remember what it is to love someone, to love Sam. I can't wait to see whee they go with this story line. It's just so, so cool.
It does make me wonder about their dad, though. I mean, he got out of hell, but did he become a demon? Does that only happen when you've been in hell a long, long time? Is John actually free or doomed to be betwixt and between like Ruby? *ponders*
Finally, on a totally shallow note, Jared looked AMAZING!
Okay, and then after that, I watched Torchwood, and that's when I think my squee actually burst into flames.
I've been wishing for a while now, as so many do, for Tosh to get some action, and this was just perfect, heart breaking, perfect. She's such an understated character, and it makes her strength and courage all the more affecting, because it's so quiet. That she takes Tommy home with her for that night, the way she lifts her chin when she announces her decision, not asks, not really. And then making sure he goes through with what he has to do, even though she knows there's nothing but the end waiting for him on the other side.
I also really enjoyed the Tosh-Owen moments, with Owen being the decent human being he occasionally knows how to be. When he's gentle with her, it's so incredibly touching, and it makes me wonder if the show is going to go to the Tosh/Owen place, although I totally believe that would break Tosh.
And then! Then! Oh my God! The kiss, THE KISS! I've only watched it like 3,056 times! Wow. More than a few synapses blown from that one. I loved that Ianto takes charge of the kiss, and as I was saying to
linaerys earlier, it's very interesting to see the change in Ianto from the first season, where he was by turns attracted to and horrified by Jack. There's no hint of ambivalence now. As Lin said, he's not holding anything back. It's just incendiary on the screen, and yet there are so many ways it could go wrong, wrong, so very wrong. It adds a subtle vunerability to Ianto that is for me much more interesting than his emo pain of last year. (And yes, I did just use the word "emo." *g*)
I'm not quite as sure what to make of Jack in that scene. I mean, there is definitely affection for Ianto, and the sexual chemistry between them is sizzling. But it doesn't quite feel to me that he's in love with Ianto, or maybe he is, and there's this detached sort of weariness that goes along with it, because as much as he's celebrating all the people he's known and loved because he didn't stay where he was, he also knows that he's going to outlive everyone he cares about. And of course, he's Jack. So he'll never belong to any one person. But Ianto seems so open-eyed about the whole thing that I don't mind. Ianto is being as brave as Tosh, throwing himself into what he wants, knowing it won't, it can't last forever.
And then I went to bed and couldn't sleep at all, because I was all giddy and fangirly and filled with happy, happy thoughts!

I love that scene SO MUCH.
Coincidentally, I was just savoring an annotated "Sateda," picspam in
I'd do anything. For any one of you. If I had to give up my life the way Ronon was going to, I would.
There's just nothing in the world that makes me happier than that.
Oh, JOHN.
Oh, MAL.
Seriously. I just -- ::flail::! with glee.

Date: 2008-02-01 08:51 pm (UTC)If this were any other show written by anyone else, I'd say probably not - but this is Torchwood and this is RTD, so I wouldn't rule it out! I would probably spontaneously combust if they did ever show Jack and Ianto in the sack, and if by some miracle I didn't spontaneously combust I'd certainly have to be dragged away from my computer screen endlessly replaying said scene!

Date: 2008-02-01 11:47 pm (UTC)In an interview with Russell T Davies, he'd revealed there are certain lines they wouldn't cross with Jack, because he's originally a Who character and, as such, needs to be consistently ... pure (for want of a better word) so as to be able to go back and forth between the shows. It wouldn't make sense to see Jack swearing and fucking his way through Cardiff and then show up on Who and only flirt harmlessly.
Which is why Jack doesn't curse. I have no doubts that Torchwood is equal-opportunity when it comes to sex scenes - het, lesbian, gay - but I'm not certain they'd use Jack for the gay ones, just because it's little more adult than his character's original personality. If that makes sense?

Date: 2008-02-01 07:18 pm (UTC)And that was such a smoking hot kiss on Torchwood, better than "Captain Jack" had (though I'll probably be pilloried for that!)
Jack did seem passive at first, yet very content to spill his heart. Last season we had Gwen asking him "have you ever loved someone like that?" and "what would've made you open the Rift?" all sorts of questions he ignored or gave evasive answers to. But something's changed between him and Ianto, and after the horseplay of last week, that was just...did I say the kiss was awesome? Did I say that I too have watched it a zillion times and it makes me all kinds of hot?
No? Too much?
Glad you're feeling giddy!

Date: 2008-02-01 08:54 pm (UTC)Well, we can stand there and be pilloried together! Because as hot as I thought the Jack-on-Jack kiss was, there's even more emotion in the Jack-Ianto scene. Something about Ianto taking the initiative is just...*shivers*
Just thinking about it is making me giddy all over again!

Date: 2008-02-01 07:46 pm (UTC)As for Torchwood... enjoyed your comments there, too. I agree with your take on the relationship between Jack and Ianto: I think Ianto is ready to take a few emotional risks with a man who will never be exclusively his. You're right, he has thrown aside his ambivalence, but he's also put aside the glowing vulnerability and awkwardness he showed only two episodes. Perhaps his love of Jack, or his faith in Jack, has made him stronger and more confident in pursuing the relationship. The question is: when the crisis comes - and I'm sure it will - can he handle it?
This combination of vulnerability, faith and courage is incredibly endearing.
I'm not quite as sure what to make of Jack in that scene. I mean, there is definitely affection for Ianto, and the sexual chemistry between them is sizzling. But it doesn't quite feel to me that he's in love with Ianto
I think he loves Ianto warmly and dearly - but not as Ianto loves him, and not exclusively, and not in the way he could if he wasn't Jack but just another 21st century mortal. Ianto is fully emotionally committed, but Jack is not, even though his love is warm and deep.
I'm watching in fascination to see where this goes. I think Jack is well aware of the discrepancies in their viewpoints (and their sense of love) and is trying very hard to be careful here, not to hurt Ianto.

Date: 2008-02-01 09:45 pm (UTC)So true! As I've been rewatching the episodes, it's been amazing to realize that there's no weak link. Each episode has moments that get me, gives me fresh insight into the characters. There are episodes that stand out, of course, but because they are just that extra special, not because the rest of the episodes are anything less than delightful.
I wish this show hadn't ended so prematurely, and there was an active, thriving fandom, but I do love my friends list for indulging my enthusiasm. I have that new fandom feeling, like falling in love only without the insecurities that can go along with that, and I just want to talk about the show, talk about it, talk about it. *g*

Yes, I quite agree with that reading of the situation, and I like how open-eyed Ianto seems about it all. Jack is as much myth as man, but Ianto really seems to have put the myth aside. He wants the man. And as in love with Jack as he is, I don't think he has any illusions about the man.
It's such, such good stuff. As you say, it really will be fascinating to see where it goes.

Date: 2008-02-01 11:29 pm (UTC)True. There are some I like better than others, but not because any of them are bad - just for various vagaries of personal taste, or character focus.
I just want to talk about the show, talk about it, talk about it. *g*
Don't let me stop you! I'm always up for Firefly talk.
Jack is as much myth as man, but Ianto really seems to have put the myth aside.
Or at least to deal with the myth and focus on the man behind it. I agree that he seems to have no illusions, but I think also that he is getting a fair assessment of Jack's needs and vulnerabilities - and this makes them not just a delightfully formidable couple, but a good working team in Torchwood.

Date: 2008-02-03 01:33 am (UTC)Sadly, BBC America had the ep running over the hour so I missed that last kiss! I just caught it, I think on megavideo but I don't know if it was from the ep I just watched or another one?
I thought how weird it was that they have it rated as TV-14 whereas in the US anything with two men kissing is labeled NC-17 99% of the time.
