Peoples reading the Bric-a-Brac Kid verse: Rodney's baby needs naming. John and Rodney have already agreed that her middle name will be Sheppard and her last name McKay since, as Rodney likes to remind John, he did all the hard work.

But they can't come to any kind of agreement on the first name, so they need your help!

although naming the kid eleanor could lead to a wonderful discussion of whether or not rodney is trying to produce a lesbian child. because eleanor is the dykiest name ever. hence, well, eleanor roosevelt.

Her first name should be Jean, or Jean-Marie. (Janette, Genevieve, etc.)

I did think about giving a nod to Jeannie with the name, but...I don't love the name Jean. Janette or Genevieve, though, definite possibilities!

Hi;
They were all great names, I just didn't like the way they went with Sheppard. So how about Samantha? Named for the witch:)

Oh, man, I couldn't click on anything, but not because of your feeble powers of naming. Quite the contrary! The problem is that Amelia is my all-time favorite name, and Amelia Earhart one of my heroes. I can't be rational about the choices.

That said, I do think Teyla's choice is wonderful, because Hope is the perfect name for the first child and also because it's Teyla.

Okay, I've talked myself into "Hope." I'll go back and click on it. Hope!

I really like the name Amelia, too. And was always fascinated by Amelia Earhart when I was growing up.

But Teyla is hard to argue with! :)

I like Alice, personally. I mean, the kid's going to be born in freaking Wonderland. (I was going to say 'down the Rabbit Hole', but it, you know, it could have been misconstrued. *scratches neck*)

If they ever move back to Earth, I can see that baby McKay may have something of a hard time fitting in.

Well, Raina got my #1 vote. But *flail* it was a hard choice! Runner-up was Hope, followed by Meredith, followed by Olivia (which is a personal bias -- one of my favourite names!).

At first, I couldn't think of any possibilities, and then I thought of too many! Hence the poll. *g*

Olivia is one of my favorite names too, and I think if the baby's name was Meredith that would be funny and kind of work, but I also like her being the daughter of warriors. Uh. Yeah. I'm glad I made a poll!

After googling in a completely lame attempt to support my favorite name on the list, I found out that the first woman to become a fellow of the Royal Society in Canada was Dr. Alice Wilson.

The other names make sense too - I just don't like them as much. I gave up on being rational about names a long time ago.

Hey, your justification works for me! Also, Alice is the name of one of my favorite aunts, so I am fond of it. nnd yes, yes, there's really no such thing as being rational about names. It's entirely subjective.

Well, I think one should always take Teyla's advice, so I voted for Hope, but if you had down ticky boxes instead of radio buttons, my second choice would have been Meredith.

So true! It's hard to disregard Teyla's advice. But baby Meredith McKay would also be right in some way... Um. Yeah. This is why there's a poll. *g*

Heeee! I just decided yesterday to call Farm Baby #2 Merrie Sheppard (Meredith for Rodney) - which means there's a strong likelihood of an army of Merediths with McKay fathers storming around the galaxy! This brings me untold joy :D *is quite daft*

Is bric-a-brac baby imminent? *bounces bounces*

I've always thought "Sophia" which means wisdom or "Irene" because that's Marie Curie's daughter (and a scientist in her own right) or maybe "Athena" (goddess of wisdom and war) because she's the one who caught and tamed Pegasus (according to the myth) would be top choices.

I'd go with Sophie, named after both Sophie Brahe (sister of Tycho) and Marie Sophie Germain, who were an astronomer and a mathematician, respectively.

Emily would also be a good choice, named after Emilie de Breteuil, who was a brilliant scholar with a particular interest in mathematics and who was the first person to translate Newton from Latin to French.

I really like Raina - it's a beautiful name in its own right, and then the meaning! My heart goes pitterpat. I also think its fitting for their daughter to have a name with Pegasus origins, as the first child of Earth parents to be born in that galaxy.

I can't choose, all of them have something going for them! *goes cross-eyed*

I'll therefore suggest Elanor ("sun star"), a Middle-Earth flower, because they live somewhere that's not really our Earth as we know it (although it's life, Jim) and it's a fascinating new galaxy and they're geeks and there are warriors and bad guys with bad teeth.

It's a golden colour (& young Hewlett = young Rodney was blond!! Eee!) and shaped like a star (& there are stargates and suns everywhere and they flow spaceships and one father's an astrophysicist and the other a pilot!!).

It's also a beautiful name, easy to say in many languages (and Atlantis is an international city), and a symbol of hope & renewal since it was the name of Sam Gamgee's first child.

I immediately liked Hope - not just because of Teyla's reasoning but I also love the name.

I've got a thing about people ending up with unfortunate initials so I typed HSM in the Wikipedia search and this is one of the things it came up with:

The Hafner-Sarnak-McCurley constant - a mathematical constant representing the probability that two randomly chosen matrix determinants will be relatively prime.

I guess that sealed it for me (although is the prime thing canon or fanon, I can't remember?)

By the way, if you do the same for MSM some odd things come up involving men, sex and skirts (although not perhaps all at the same time!).

Date: 2007-04-04 02:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com
The prime/not prime thing is canon. That would be so funny if that were Rodney's reasoning behind naming her that. *g*

My vote is for Meredith Elizabeth Sheppard-McKay out of their respect and foundness for Elizabeth. :)

The evil part of my brain says she should be named Atlantis though. ;)

Will we get a scene of them finding out the sex, and see John's reaction too?

I have no suggestions for what you should name her but think that you should not name her any of the following:

Alisia, Amelia, Emma, Dakota, McKenzie, Abby, Kylie, Kaylie, Jayden or Kayden

As every one of those names seems to currently be on the top ten baby name list in America right now. Abby is actually my real name and wasn't popular at all when I was growing up, but the past decade or so every parent in America names their dog, cat and kid Abby.

I can't help it. I'm oddly fond of Theano. Maybe when she reaches that age where she starts rolling her eyes at her dads and dressed in all black and paints her hair purple, she could call herself that.
